Morir sin sufrimiento / To die without suffering

Against those who are in favor of euthanasia, which directly causes the death of the patient, prevails the reality of the common desire to live, to which corresponds the right to life. The palliative cares are a special form of attention to provide well-being and support to the patients and their families at the final moments of a disease which will precipitate into death. It is the moment at which the medicine cannot avoid the death but can palliates the suffering. Analgesics, sedatives and anesthetics are the therapeutic arms more used to calm the pain. Also the drug of design can induce to an empathy state, that could move away the fear to die.
Nevertheless, on the contrary to other countries, the Europeans value more at the hour of death an spiritual attention than a merely analgesic care. It is a great aid to face the most tragic moment in the life.
The Care Center La Laguna is an initiative born in Madrid for the sanitary, the human and the social support to patients with terminal diagnosis and with aid. With the work of many people and volunteers, the elderly can have a quality of life in their last years. Promoted by the Vianorte Foundation, it is based on two fundamental lines of action: the palliative medicine for the terminal patients and the social support for all the other problems parallel to the medical, of the patient and of his immediate environment.
Apart of being a center of day, La Laguna accounts with a numerous team of volunteers who visit the patients and limited elderly, and their families. These moments of company suppose to them a psychological relief, a reason for distraction and an emotional support. Also courses for better care of these patients, an spiritual treasure, have started up.
“The palliative cares constitutes a privileged form of a disinterested charity. Therefore they must be encouraged”, affirms the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
