Periodistas arrestados El número de reporteros detenidos en el orbe se elevó por segundo año consecutivo, aunque un tercio de los encerrados son periodistas online y bloggers de Internet, informó el Comité de Defensa de los Medios de Comunicación, con sede en Estados Unidos. El padrón del Comité para la Protección de los Periodistas asevera que existía un record de 134 periodistas en presidio a primeros de este mes, en 24 países, siendo China, Cuba, Eritrea y Etiopia los estados con un mayor número de detenidos. "Estamos en un punto crucial en la lucha por la libertad de prensa ya que los estados autoritarios han hecho de Internet su mayor frente en sus esfuerzos por controlar la información", afirmó el presidente del comité, Joel Simon. El informe, asimismo, indica que 20 redactores se hallan encerrados sin ningún cargo y que Eritrea cuenta con la mitad de estos procesos. El comité dijo que Estados Unidos mantenía recluidos a dos periodistas sin ninguna indagación: el reportero gráfico de Associated Press Bilal Hussein, ahora arrestado, desde hace ocho meses, en Irak, y el cámara de Al Yazira, Sami al-Haj, confinado durante cinco años en Guantánamo, Cuba. Joshua Wolf, un blogger que se rehusó depositar un vídeo de un escándalo en 2005 a un gran tribunal federal de Estados Unidos, igualmente está en el calabozo. “Por octavo año consecutivo, China lidera la lista de países con mayor número de periodistas encarcelados con 31, seguida de Cuba con 24, Eritrea con 23 y Etiopía con 18”, afirma Nichols.
